San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, influential Baroque church in Rome that was designed by Francesco Borromini as part of a small monastery for a community of Spanish monks. It was commissioned in 1634 and was built during 1638-46, except for the tall facade, which was added about 1677. Built to fit. The cloister is a contrast - it is rather spare, intimate and peaceful. A portrait of the architect hangs in the church off the sacristy. The Church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane is open from 10:00 until 1:00 pm/3:00 pm until 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday; open from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm on Sunday.
